#Highly Sensitive People: Can you handle the truth?

Can you handle the truth? By that I mean, can you be truthful about yourself, other people, and human nature? Here are some thought-provoking quotes:

“The truth will set you free, but first it will piss you off.”
― Gloria Steinem

“Above all, don’t lie to yourself. The man who lies to himself and listens to his own lie comes to a point that he cannot distinguish the truth within him, or around him, and so loses all respect for himself and for others. And having no respect he ceases to love.”
― Fyodor Dostoyevsky, The Brothers Karamazov

“Tell the truth, or someone will tell it for you.”
― Stephanie Klein, Straight Up and Dirty: A Memoir

“So you’re always honest,” I said.
“Aren’t you?”
“No,” I told him. “I’m not.”
“Well, that’s good to know, I guess.”
“I’m not saying I’m a liar,” I told him. He raised his eyebrows. “That’s not how I meant it, anyways.”
“How’d you mean it, then?”
“I just…I don’t always say what I feel.”
“Why not?”
“Because the truth sometimes hurts,” I said.
“Yeah,” he said. “So do lies, though.”
― Sarah Dessen, Just Listen

“The best way to find out if you can trust somebody is to trust them.”
― Ernest Hemingway

“If you do not tell the truth about yourself you cannot tell it about other people.”
― Virginia Woolf

“Thinking something does not make it true. Wanting something does not make it real.”
― Michelle Hodkin, The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer

“Most men would rather deny a hard truth than face it.”
― George R.R. Martin, A Game of Thrones

“There’s a world of difference between truth and facts. Facts can obscure truth.”
― Maya Angelou

“The truth doesn’t always set you free; people prefer to believe prettier, neatly wrapped lies”
― Jodi Picoult, Keeping Faith

“Three things can not hide for long: the Moon, the Sun and the Truth.”
― Gautama Buddha

“Why lie? It always comes back to haunt you.” — Cliff Harwin

Can you handle the truth? I’m interested in any thoughts or comments that you have.
