Is guilt good or bad? It depends. How is it being used? Is it used to motivate you to do something good? Is guilt used to manipulate you to do something good for someone else? This is a very complex question!
Guilt is a very powerful motivator. It’s important to analyze the effect it has in your life. Is guilt a valuable guide or something to outgrow? How has guilt had an impact on your life?
For me, guilt has made me a law-abiding citizen trying to do the right thing. I’m not perfect, but I don’t see myself being arrested anytime soon. At least I hope not!
Guilt has been used as a very effective tool against me. I’m not sure if it’s a highly sensitive characteristic or not, but I’ve been an easy target for master manipulators who have used “guilt tripping” for their own needs. Can anyone relate to this?
I have learned that I need to consider my own needs. Does this make me a terrible and selfish person? I think not! Why not consider your own needs? Everyone else does! It’s fine to consider the needs or wants of others, but not at the expense of your own well-being.
Who makes you feel guilty? It could be a relative (mother, father, sister, brother), friend, boss, co-worker, etc. Have I left anyone out? Please feel free to add as needed.
Not all guilt is bad. It can motivate you to do what you need to do to better yourself and to make situations better. Have you ever felt guilty for eating too much, not exercising enough, not applying yourself to your studies, or have felt guilty for something you said or did? Guilt probably made you feel compelled to give a better effort, and apologize when appropriate.
