#Highly Sensitive People: Are you smart enough to realize when you need help?

Are you smart enough to realize when you need help? It’s very easy to get caught up in our problems and become paralyzed with fear, self-doubt, and other destructive feelings that make us feel terrible. This state of mind seems to make our problems bigger than they actually are.

The trick to dealing with this sad state of affairs is to be consciously aware of your feelings. There are times when you can take care of pressing issues on your own and other times you need to seek help.

That help can include talking to a spouse, a relative, friend, a person of the clergy, mental health professional, school counselor, physician, etc. There are also many self-help groups on anything that you can think of. A shortage of help isn’t the problem, it’s our inability to seek help when we need it. When you are honest with yourself and your feelings, you’ll know the best road for you to take.

It’s important to look for help when dealing with illness or any other emotional or physical problem. It’s counterproductive to ignore anything that is unpleasant. All problems at some time have to be dealt with. It’s easier and more productive to handle a problem at the beginning, rather than let it get worse.

I have sought guidance at different stages of my life. It helped me put my challenges in its proper perspective and help guide me in the right direction.

    I find I really struggle to seek help. I don’t think this is out of over-confidence, quite the opposite in fact. Moreover, I find there is something of a confusing delay very often. I need help at point x. So I ask my therapist for an appointment, which can only be after a certain period, by which time I generally start to feel a little better again, and the conversation is not as close to the reality that forced me to seek it as it needs to be. This seems to reinforce the idea that help from others is somehow ineffective. Unfortunately, she is about the only person in the world I feel I can be completely open with. Then there is seeking help from God. This generally works and helps change my reality, but it can be frustrating to have to accept this at times of difficulty. Why? Because accepting God’s power means accepting a limit on my ‘power’, autonomy and freedom of thought. So…yeh. That’s me.

      Hi Adil,

      Everyone needs help at some point in their lives. It’s a sign of intelligence and strength to seek it. A support team ranging from a higher power, friend, therapist, etc., is important to have when times get tough for a period of time. That period of time can range from a few days to months depending on the challenge or problem. Use your intuition to seek help. Why suffer your burden alone?
