#Highly Sensitive People: How well do you handle adversity?

Everyone has difficult times. We can’t avoid it. It’s a part of life that we need to accept. Sure we highly sensitive people feel more than others, but it shouldn’t be used as an excuse to feel or be down more than others.

Ill-health, losing a loved one, unemployment, various traumas, either past or present, or misfortune of any kind will rear its ugly head at some point in our lives.

It’s normal to feel hurt, sad, angry, fearful, or whatever else your feeling. You can’t deny your pain. It doesn’t help your situation. The old saying…”Whatever you resist persists” is definitely true.

Your ability to handle adversity depends on your attitude towards it. Some important questions to consider are… Will you dwell on it longer than need be? How will it affect your long-term view of life? Everyone is different, but we need to differentiate what’s normal or abnormal suffering.

The difference between people who get through life’s challenging moments, regardless of its severity, are those who can bounce back faster from these sometimes debilitating events.

Some tips for coping with adversity include:

* Give yourself enough time to grieve. It’s important to realize that a loss is an emotional jolt, regardless if it’s large or small. Take alone time, but don’t become isolated to people who can help you. Get out and be with people as soon as possible.

* Take care of yourself. Don’t neglect your health. The healthier you are, the better you’ll be able to handle the emotional and physical effects of difficult times.

* Be philosophical. Have faith that you’ll do whatever it takes to handle whatever comes up in your life. You cannot live fully by being afraid. Develop a strategy to deal with difficult times. Have your support team in place. This might include having family, friends, and professional help on board that you can turn to in times of need. Isn’t it ironic that people turn to highly sensitive people for support, but we are sometimes reluctant to seek support? Why is this so?

* Be in control of your feelings. We are 100% in control of our feelings. You might not be able to control what happens to you, but you can control how you react to what happens to you. Like I mentioned previously, it’s normal to grieve, but we as highly sensitive people have the ability to determine when enough is enough. Use it and don’t cause more grief and suffering on yourself.
