What are you putting off?

Have you ever had a task that you’ve been putting off? Does it make you feel guilty and uneasy? Do you have a strong sense of non-completion that you seem to have a lot of loose ends? I know that everyone can relate to these questions.

My wife and I are in the process of better organizing our house. Just the thought of this makes us feel overwhelmed. We’ve been living in our house over thirty years. We’re collectors of everything! The thought of us actually parting with something is very nerve-wracking indeed!

What’s a frazzled couple to do? We know that we’ll feel better and lighter when we take steps to lighten the load. If this is the case, why is this task so difficult? Probably because we see this huge project as unachievable. Isn’t this true with everything?

We’ve decided to break up this project into small steps and do a little bit each week. Perhaps we can throw out some items on garbage and recycling day. A garage might be a lot of fun, we’ll actually see and talk to our neighbors, and it’ll give us a chance to better achieve our goals. Maybe focus on one room at a time Anything we can do over a period of time will get the job done.

Have you ever had the all or nothing attitude of doing things? By this I mean, do you feel that if you can’t do everything right away, it’s not worth doing? If so, it will prevent you from doing something you want and need to do.

What have you been putting off? What can you realistically do to lighten your emotional and physically load? I’m interested in any thoughts or comments that you have.
